Icons are how we identify an app among the neatly arranged clutter on our phones. Some of them hidden and deeper meanings. While you might be using a handful of apps daily, you might be surprised when you can't locate the icon of the app that you had installed earlier. That's what is happening to many Android phone owners who often talk about missing app icons. So we decided to take a closer look at that problem.

I have at least managed the pipeline to make a shortcut to games in the Windows Games Explorer that works for Steam games or whatever game, but for whatever the reason may be those icons can become missing or corrupt to the games explorer as in the screenshot of a game's icon with missing data. I have come to be capable of cleaning the icon cache restoring the correct game icons byeth usingeth. Find & Download Free Graphic Resources for Pigeon Icon. 400+ Vectors, Stock Photos & PSD files. A lot of my Start Menu icons have recently disappeared. Both tiles and 'All Apps' entries. The missing items range from games to Windows features. For example 'Windows Accessories' only has three items listed and 'Windows Administrative Tools' is missing altogether. The only thing I've done recently, which might have caused this is running.

There are two issues at hand, and I will address both. You can view the app in the app drawer, but it is missing on the home screen. The app icon is missing everywhere or shows a 'green Android' logo instead of the app logo.

  • Just got the game yesterday and my Icons were missing to. I restarted the game twice and they were back. I also started out in the scenario editor running a Test when I noticed Icons were missing. Since the double restart I have always had my icons working. That's nice to know. Some games, for some reason, behave weird the first time they are run.
  • Some icons missing from map and unaccessible in-game: I have been playing Forza Horizon 4 since day one and completed the game many months ago. This was all done on a single desktop PC. I recently began studying at university and could not bring my desktop to my dorm so I have also loaded my account onto.
Note: I am assuming you have already performed basic tests like rebooting your phone and updating/reinstalling the app in question.

Let's begin.

1. Add to Home Screen

Advanced users can move on to the next point, but those who are new to Android or smartphone world should read it once. You may have deleted the app icon, and not the app itself, from the home screen.

Open the App Drawer and find the app that's missing and press and hold it until you see the home screen in the background. Move and release to create a new app icon on the home screen.

Speaking about the home screen, you could have moved the app to a folder and are simply looking at the wrong place. The same can be true for app drawer too.

2. Hidden Apps

Did you or someone with access to your phone hide the app? Most launchers offer this feature to hide apps. The setting's location will differ based on the launcher app you are using, but usually, they are easy to find.

Tap and hold anywhere on the home screen to find launcher settings. Unhide the app and see if the app icon is visible now.

3. Disabled App

A bug or your kiddo might have accidentally disabled the app, which is why it is no longer active. It is not the same as uninstalling an app. It is there but just disabled and hence unusable, leading to the missing app icon issue.

Open Settings and under Manage app, search for the app whose icon is missing, and tap to open it. Do you notice an option to Start/Enable the app? It could be under the App Info menu, depending on the make and model of your phone. If yes, most probably, the app is disabled, and you need to re-enable it.

4. Icon Pack

One of the things that distinguish Android from iOS is customizations. One way to do that is by using an icon pack. What it does is changes the look of the selected app icon, making it unrecognizable, occasionally. Are you using one? It is also possible that an icon pack app was included when you installed some other launcher or theme app. That's another thing about Android.

5. Launcher Problem

A launcher is how you access the app drawer, notifications, and other areas or aspects of the smartphone. We have covered some great Android launchers on GT. Your launcher may be acting up. A recent update could be responsible in which case, switch to default launcher and check if app icons are still missing.

Try resetting the launcher to see if bad data is responsible. Open Settings and go to Manage app or App list. You are looking for a third-party or default launcher here. Samsung calls it TouchWiz, for example. Open it, tap on Storage, and select Clear data.

You should also try clearing the cache and data of the launcher app itself. Go back to the previous screen and select Clear data at the bottom of the screen and tap on Clear all data.

On a related note, updating your launcher from the Play Store might also help.

6. App Data and Cache

You will be clearing the cache and data of the app whose icon is missing the same way you cleared data of the launcher app in the above point. Open Settings and find the 'missing icon' app under Manage app. Tap Clear data at the bottom of the screen and select Clear all data.

Found Missing

We don't pay enough attention to icons unless they go missing on our Android phones. After all, that's how we identify an app and open it. How do you interact with an app if you can't locate it? I hope the above points helped you restore missing app icons.

If nothing else works, then I suggest you format your smartphone after taking a backup, but that's the last thing I'd suggest to anybody. As always, if you found another way to fix the issue, do share it with the rest of us in the comments below. It might help someone else.

Icons are there to help us recognize an app and distinguish between different shortcuts and folders, so we can click on the one we need without wasting too much time reading the text instead. They make life simpler and help companies create brands. But some Windows 10 users see blank icons on their Windows 10 desktop. That is a strange error.

While it is not something major that will affect the functioning of your Windows 10 OS or any app that you are using, it can still be frustrating, especially when you want to launch an app or open a folder from your desktop. There are a few solutions I found that should help.

Let’s begin.

1. Update Apps and OS and Reboot

You know that’s the first thing we suggest. Open Settings and click on Update & Security.

Under Windows Update tab on the left, you will find any updates that are pending to be downloaded or installed on your PC. You can also check for updates manually.

Since this error is related to app icons, I would recommend updating apps to see if that resolves the missing or blank icons error. Open Windows Store, click on Download, and updates icon on the upper right. Mostly, you will see a number there if updates are found.

If not, I would suggest you check manually once. Click on Update all to begin.

When everything is updated, reboot your PC once and check if the icons reappear.

2. Uninstall Google Drive

Several users have reported that uninstalling Google Drive from their computer helped resolve the issue. If so, download a fresh copy of the app and try installing it again. If the problem persists, you will have to find an alternative or contact Google Drive support staff.

3. Reinstall Apps

Can you see icons for some apps and not for others. Maybe, the error is specific to some apps instead of being system wide? Updating apps didn’t work, did it? Try uninstalling the app and then reinstalling it from the Windows Store. You may also try installing it from the source site directly instead of using the Windows Store. It helped some users.

4. Icon Settings

Windows 10 comes with icon settings that you can tweak under Settings. These are for default desktop icons like Recycle bin and so on. Press Windows key+I to Open it and click on Personalization.

Under Themes, scroll to the bottom to select Desktop icon settings.

Missing

Select the item for which you are not seeing the icon and click on Change Icon here to replace it.

If that doesn’t work, try the Restore Default button on the same screen.

5. Change Icon Manually

In the case of apps, you can change the icon manually. To do so, right-click on the app and select Properties. You can also use the Alt+Enter shortcut when the app is selected. Under the Shortcut tab, click on Change Icon to begin.

If you have downloaded an icon pack from the web, you can browse to the folder and select that instead of going with the default options which are not so great, to be frank.

6. Update Display Adaptor Drivers

It is a long shot but still worth a try. Open the Device Manager and look for Display Adaptors. Update your graphics card drivers by right-clicking on it.

Select Update driver here and follow on-screen instructions.

7. DISM and SFC Scan

The DISM command will service the Windows image and repair irregularities with the system files. The SFC scan will scan for corrupt system files and try to repair it. Open the Command Prompt with admin rights and type these two commands one at a time.

You will find more info on this link.

8. Rebuild Icon Cache

It is probably the last thing you can do. Windows saves icon images as cache files to render them quickly when required, and without consuming too many resources. Over time, this cache memory could get corrupted or deleted. Sometimes, a recently installed third-party app may also interfere, as some users found with Google Drive.

To rebuild the icon cache, close all apps and windows. Everything. Open Command Prompt with admin rights from Windows Search.

Type this command to navigate to the directory where the icon cache is saved. You can copy and paste the commands. Press Ctrl+C to copy and right-click in Command Prompt to paste. Hit Enter when you see the command.

Now type this command to find out if the icon cache files are indeed in that location.

You should now see an output that should look like this.

  • iconcache_1280.db
  • iconcache_16.db
  • iconcache_1920.db
  • iconcache_256.db
  • iconcache_2560.db
  • iconcache_32.db
  • iconcache_48.db
  • iconcache_768.db
  • iconcache_96.db
  • iconcache_custom_stream.db
  • iconcache_exif.db
  • iconcache_idx.db
  • iconcache_sr.db
  • iconcache_wide.db
  • iconcache_wide_alternate.db
Pigeon

Type this command to stop the File Explorer. Your desktop will stop responding and will go blank or black. That's cool.

Now, type this command to delete the icon cache files.

Now type this command to make sure that the files have been indeed deleted.

If you still see some database entries, then either some apps are still running (interfering) or you have not followed the steps correctly. Start from the beginning.

Finally, type this command to restart File Explorer.

Close the Command Prompt.

At this point, Windows 10 will reboot automatically, will recreate the icon cache files from scratch, and restart the File Explorer. That may take some time so be patient.

Iconic Icons

Some Icons are differently crafted and that's how most people recognize apps. That is another reason why icons are important. They help create brand recognition. While the missing or blank icons error is nothing to worry about, you should still try and resolve it to avoid future headaches.
